A few weeks ago, Melissa Tagg and I decided to celebrate our love of Christmas and movies by putting together a blog event combining the two! The idea grew until it became what you're about to read - twelve authors talking about their favorite movies, split into two blogs, and giving away a total of twelve books.
This week, we'll hear from Allison Pittman, Becky Wade, Katherine Reay, Kristin Billerbeck, Kristy Cambron, and Melissa Tagg!
My favorite Christmas movie is a classic—one that not a lot of people have seen. Remember the Night, 1940, stars Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck in a story that’s experienced different incarnations. Stanwyck is a petty thief, arrested on Christmas Eve, and remanded into the custody of the District Attorney until her case can be heard after the holiday. From there, we follow the two on a road trip to his idyllic hometown for a family-centered celebration. Along the way, we get a glimpse into her past, and we understand her choices. This film, though, makes the brave choice of allowing us to understand, but not forgive. Not yet. MacMurray’s character struggles with his attraction, fighting it with every hooded look, restrained touch, every stoic turn of phrase.
Remember the Night is a film that brings both of its characters to a true moment of crisis. A choice that will challenge what they know to be true and good in the world. What sets this film apart from other Christmas offerings is the fact that you, too, will have to make the same choice. And if you’re like me, the first time you watch it, you’ll be surprised at the direction of your own heart.
Christmas Vacation - with Becky Wade
In 1989, this movie suited my goofy teenage sense of humor to a T. I remember laughing all the way through it. In those days, I related to the kids in the movie, but nowadays I relate to Chevy Chase's character. I'm the one who feels the desire and pressure to provide a 'perfect' and 'memorable' Christmas for my family. I'm the one whose efforts often bomb.
It's easy to long for a picture perfect Christmas, isn't it? In trying to achieve it, I'm sometimes tempted to exhaust myself because I want to do it all and I want it all to be wonderful. And in the busy-ness, I can miss the Christ of Christmas.
This year, I'm trying to do less and concentrate on Him more. He's the one who never disappoints. Our expectations can never, never, never measure up to the greatness of His reality. I wish you all a Christmas filled with His peace. God bless!
I get three movies! The Santa Clause (1994), The Santa Clause 2 (2002) and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006). Okay, I love these movies. They showcase Tim Allen at his best. I love his Santa’s reluctance then sold-out enthusiasm for the job – and even the delightful mayhem that develops in the 3rd movie as he questions the cost of his unique vocation.
As for the kids – they’re all delightful. Charlie warms your heart in the 1st movie and his little sister, Lucy, is an absolute charmer in the 2nd and 3rd. And the scenery! I want to live at this North Pole. It’s one of the best visual depictions of this magical place that we all secretly hope (know) exists. Curl up, grab some popcorn and cocoa and enjoy!
It's a tradition at my house to have the 24-hours of "A Christmas Story" running in the ba`ckground as we prepare for Christmas dinner. There are so many memorable parts of that movie that have worked their way into our household vocabulary and my dad is a huge "Jean Shepherd" fan. My dad grew up in the same time frame, and just loves to tell us how true everything in the story is and appreciates the nostalgia. It's a tale that brings my family together and isn't that what the holidays are all about? To appreciate what God has given us? The Ultimate Gift?
I love so many Christmas movies, that it's difficult to choose a favorite. But as a huge classic movie fan, nostalgia is going to win me over every time. The top spot on my favorites list would have to be claimed by Meet me in St. Louis, starring the stunning Judy Garland. The song is iconic. The story is warm and the characters unforgettable. And for this writer gal? It will always remind me of drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace, watching this film with my family while Christmas snow blanketed the world outside our window.
I like to think I’m a pretty nice and even-keeled person, but once a friend told me he thought It’s a Wonderful Life was *gasp* “boring.” I had to work really hard to convince myself not to a) stick my tongue out at him and b) chuck our years of friendship out the window after that one snide comment.
This should tell you how much I love — nay, adore — the movie It’s a Wonderful Life. It is nostalgic and sentimental and tear-jerking, all things a good holiday movie should be. But it’s also poignant. The moment when Jimmy Stewart finds Zuzu’s petals in his pocket and realizes his mouth’s bleeding…it’s jubilant perfection. When he runs through town yelling, “Merry Christmas, Bedford Falls…Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!” my heart is celebrating along with him.
Plus, Donna Reed is from Iowa. And that’s happy.

Oh this is fun! Love reading everyone's favorites, but I've gotta say I particularly love seeing Remember the Night get some recognition! :)
ReplyDeleteI was so thrilled when Allison told me about it, because it's never made it on my radar. Definitely need to track it down!
DeleteI'm glad to see it getting all the love in the comments! It only gets aired once or twice during the Holidays. Gotta get a copy for myself!
DeleteForgot to add my fav Christmas movie...it's a tie between Christmas in Connecticut and Holiday Affair.
ReplyDeleteTwo GREAT classic films! Great choices. ; )
DeleteThe Santa Clause I is my favorite Christmas movie. I can do without II and III. I love the entire movie. I have to admit that Elf makes me smile too. :)
ReplyDeleteLove Elf - I've never looked at maple syrup the same way since.
DeleteI <3 Elf too! We've already watched it twice this year. : ) "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!"
DeleteYES! I'm so glad someone mentioned Remember the Night. I love that one. Oh and Kristy included Meet Me in St. Louis! That movie is remarkably entertaining...especially the crazy kids.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Tootie and her dying dolls - so great.
DeleteYES!!! When I was young, I never thought Tootie's morbid antics were the least bit "off". She was just delightful and the family's story so inviting. You know what's funny? I grew up on "Alonzo Smith" road. WOW!
DeleteYou grew up on Alonzo Smith Road?? That's so sweet.
DeleteAnd yes, I was the same, Kristy. As a kid Tootie was just...Tootie. Then I rewatched it as a teenager and was like "WHAT is up with, Tootie? She's cray-cray!" Only cray-cray wasn't a phrase then, so I'm pretty sure I just said "crazy." :)
It's a Wonderful Life would definitely have to be my favorite. You just can't top Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed :D I've watched it every year since I was eight, and I love it little more each time :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for offering such a fun giveaway!
~ Micaela
Glad you enjoyed, Micaela! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteLOVE that movie, Micaela! We watched it with our eight year-old this year (the first time he'd seen it), and it was like seeing it again for the first time. Such a beautiful film. (Thank you, Frank Capra!!!)
DeleteSuch a great selection of movies mine is one magic Christmas. dkstevensne@outlook. Dot com
ReplyDeleteI'll have to track that one down! Mary Steenburgen is adorbs.
DeleteI pick A Christmas Story because I enjoy watching my family of boys watching the movie. They think it is hysterical! It is so much fun to watch them laughing together.
ReplyDeleteI will also watch just about anything sappy on the Hallmark channel!
That sounds like a win for you guys, Melissa!
DeleteHa ha ha! I love the line: "Hey - it must be Italian. It says, Fragile!"
DeleteMiracle on 34th Street is my favorite Christmas movie.
ReplyDeleteLoooooooooooooooooooove Miracle on 34th Street. (I actually wasn't planning to use so many o's, but there just didn't seem to be enough). It's so charming, and the writing is so sharp!
DeleteMy favorite Christmas movie is definitely White Christmas! I love musicals and the old crooners! Even though my favorite crooner/entertainer, Dean Martin, wasn't in the movie!
ReplyDeleteOh, but Danny Kaye carries his weight and then some! Such a great movie.
DeleteOh, the beautious crooning in that film! ; )
DeleteAll of them? Does that count? Miracle on 34th Street and It is a Wonderful life.
ReplyDeleteBoth great picks!
DeleteWhite Christmas. Dumb story, but Bing! Danny Kaye! Sisters, twice! It's the only one I go out of my way to watch.
ReplyDeleteEh, the story's thin, but everything else! The part where Danny gets Bing laughing during Sisters is a bit of movie magic.
DeleteI Love Meet me in St. Lewis and White Christmas both my favorite!!
ReplyDeleteThey're both excellent movies!
DeleteMe too, Esther! Plus, you and Judy';s character have the same lovely name! ; )
DeleteI am not very familiar with Christmas movies since I don't watch the TV, but my daughter has made me watch a couple of her videos, which unfortunately, I cannot remember the names. lisajcowell(at)cs(dot)com in Ohio
ReplyDeleteIt's sweet of your daughter to share! Thanks for stopping by :-)
DeleteI happen to like anything Christmas - movies, books, (snow if I'm inside and not going anywhere) but to pick a specific Christmas movie - whatever I watched last :)
ReplyDeletejking23(at)kent(dot)edu
Fair enough!
DeleteMy favorite Christmas movies are White Christmas and While You Were Sleeping.
ReplyDeleterbgillihan[at]gmail[dot]com
Cesar Romero was not Spanish!
Delete(That's code for yes, I totally agree)
I love Holiday Inn and White Christmas. Anything with Bing Crosby really
ReplyDeleteGreat picks! I think of Holiday Inn whenever I consider canning fruit ;-)
DeleteI always get Holiday Inn and White Christmas confused. Are they 2 different movies?
DeleteI've enjoyed watching THE CHRISTMAS STORY many times with our family. Often the kids (now adults) would watch it and I would only catch a few minutes of it because I was so busy with holiday preparations. It was actually several years before I saw the entire movie.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoyed it when you did get to see it at last!
DeleteMuppet Christmas Carol
ReplyDelete-Kelsey P.
Oh my gosh, so great. I'm kinda sad that none of the twelve authors chose that one to write about!
DeleteYAY!!!! I loved the Muppets singing the 12 Days of Christmas with John Denver (from years ago). My Dad made me a special CD of that music a couple of years ago, and surprised me for Christmas. Now that he's gone, it's one of my most treasured Christmas memories. ; )
DeleteDefinitely A Christmas Story! I watched the 24 hour marathon with my family as a kid and now I watch it with my kids :)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like fun, Shannon!
DeleteWhile You Were Sleeping is probably my favorite Christmas movie, partly because it doesn't feel out of season to watch any time of year (because it spans the whole season). As a kid, though, I definitely favored Home Alone.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally with you on Sleeping! I stuck it on a little while ago for the same reasons - something a little festive but not very. I'm just glad Peter didn't have a reason to burn down her apartment for Easter ;-)
DeleteMy favorites are White Christmas and Holiday Inn. Definitely go for the old classics rather than the new. Love Meet Me in St. Louis, too, but I don't think of that as a 'Christmas' movie as much. I'll have to check out Remember the Night. The story sounds familiar, but I'm not sure if I've seen it or not.
ReplyDeleteYES - I'm with you on the classic movies. I watch TCM more than any other channel! ; )
DeleteMIchelle, I'm definitely the same...ALL about the classics. I try to get into newer Christmas movies sometimes but they just never do it for me. The closest I've come to liking a new one is Elf...which I think is pretty hilarious.
DeleteI love watching Christmas in Connecticut, White Christmas, Miracle on 34th St (the original) and It's a Wonderful Life. I love the older movies! I do enjoy A Christmas Story also, although it doesn't quite rank up there with the others :-)
ReplyDeleteThere is something special classic Christmas movies! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteMy favourite Christmas movie is a Hallmark movie we watched on TV a few years ago called "A Christmas Angel". We have looked for it ever since to buy a copy and can't find it anywhere. :( - Arletta
ReplyDeleteDoes that movie have Teri Pollo and Dela Reese? I think I just saw it and it was SO good. It's available on Netflix, my friend!
DeleteWhite Christmas is the first that comes to mind!
ReplyDeleteI love the clothes in that movie!
DeleteAlways watch White Christmas, Meet me in St. Louis, and Christmas in Connecticut ( barbara stanwyk version)
ReplyDeleteYou've got great taste!
DeleteI NEED something new to read over Christmas! Thanks!! My favorite Christmas movie is It's a Wonderful Life, which my husband calls Miracle on 34th Street every year! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's too funny!
DeleteOh I love "White Christmas!" It's my favorite Christmas (or any time) movie.
ReplyDeleteWhite Christmas does make for a great "anytime" movie!
DeleteOh I forgot to mention that I live in Oregon too! I'm out in Oregon City!
ReplyDeleteThat's so great!! Great to meet you, neighbor!
DeleteI filled this out but not sure if posted so mine is A Christmas Card about a soldier who receives a Christmas card from a woman he's never met and then when one of his soldiers dies he takes the body back home and ends up meeting the woman and falling in love with her.
ReplyDeleteYes - they show this one on the Hallmark Channel almost every year. It's a good one.
DeleteThat sounds like a good one, Naomi!
DeleteMy favorite Christmas movie is definitely Elf! My family quotes it all year long. I also have a special place in my heart for the cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
ReplyDeleteHow the Grinch Stole Christmas is a great one (the cartoon, not that live-action mess)! And Elf is super, super quotable :-)
DeleteI love Elf, and Prep and Landing is also a favorite around here, but I also love to watch movies that include Christmas scenes . . . "You've Got Mail" might be my favorite of those!
ReplyDeleteYes! You've Got Mail is on my to-watch list for that reason - I always think of it when I think of "twinkle lights"!
DeleteI always mention White Christmas because Rosemary Clooney grew up about 25 miles from my home but I also love Miracle on 34th Street and Christmas in Connecticut.
ReplyDeleteConnie
cps1950@gmail.com
What a great Rosemary Clooney connection!
DeleteI like White Christmas, A Christmas Carol, It's a Wonderful Life... well, my list is long, so i won't put the entire list here.
ReplyDeleteAllison Pittman ~ I have never seen Remember the Night, but I'm going to look for it! That sounds like a great movie!
Thank you ALL for sharing with us, your audience.
Thanks for stopping by, Kandi!

DeleteI would have to say that my all time favorite Christmas movie is "It's A Wonderful Life" and my second favorite is A White Christmas.
ReplyDeleteSolid choices, Laura! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteA White Christmas and Miracle on 34th Street.
ReplyDeleteLove them both! Thanks for visiting!
DeleteSo many to choose from, but somehow, I have always loved Home Alone & Elf :)
ReplyDeleteI think you're the first guest here to say Home Alone!!!! My family loves that one. In fact, it was the first Christmas movie we watched this year. It also has fantastic music. ; )
DeleteMy favorite holiday movie is It's a Wonderful Life. I remember watching this holiday classic with my mom growing up and I always got excited to watch it with her. The moral of the movie to not take anything for granted is what makes me like it the most. Thank you for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely tradition! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteSuper fun blog post! My all-time favorite Christmas movie would be While You Were Sleeping. :) A close second is White Christmas.
ReplyDelete--Janette F
While You Were Sleeping is so, so good! Great picks, both :-)
DeleteHallmark movies like Nine Lives of Christmas and Mrs. Miracle.
ReplyDeleteLucky for us we get the Hallmark movies all month long before Christmas! Yahoo!! ; )
DeleteI can't wait to see Nine Lives of Christmas! I've heard so many good things about it.
DeleteI need to pull out the Christmas movies! I love Arthur's Christmas, Elf, and The Santa Clause.
ReplyDeleteBe sure to visit Melissa Tagg's blog on Friday! There might be a little bit about Arthur Christmas and Elf ;-)
DeleteI LOVE Christmas movies. But if I had to pick a favorite it would probably be White Christmas.
ReplyDeleteA solid pick! Thanks for stopping by, Tima!
DeleteMiracle on 34th Street - the original.
ReplyDeleteIt's so good! I've read my mom's copy of the novelization, an adorable vintage book with a red cover. A great book and a wonderful film :-)
DeleteThe Polar Express. I love watching this with my Grandchildren..
ReplyDeleteOur kids love this one, Teena. ; )
DeleteIt's a Wonderful Life is best, of course. Hopefully White Christmas and Holiday Inn will be included in the next 6. Is Meet John Doe considered a Christmas movie? If so, it's way up there!
ReplyDeleteBe sure to stop by Melissa Tagg's blog on Friday to find out! I'm not familiar with Meet John Doe - I'll have to look for it!
DeleteI've never commented on a blog before and seem to be having trouble! Sorry if it turns out I'm leaving multiple comments! My favorite is It's a Wonderful Life. Of course. If Meet John Doe is considered a Christmas movie, it's way up there, too!
ReplyDeleteNo worries! Techno blips happen :-)
DeleteI LOVE Christmas movies - but if I had to pick just one, it would probably be EBBIE - it is a lifetime movie, which is a version of A Christmas Carol.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds cool, Carla! Thanks for visiting!
DeleteGeorge C. Scott's version of A Christmas Carol is my favorite, partly because I love Dickens and partly because that movie is a Christmas staple in my house.
ReplyDeleteGreat pick, Kathryn! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteIt's a wonderful life.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting, Stephanie!
DeleteIt's A Wonderful Life is my all time favorite. It touches me deep in my heart. Yes, I enjoy many other movies and look forward to seeing them each year. My second favorite would be A Walton Christmas. I grew up watching the Waltons and they reminded me of my family. Today when I watch them, it takes me back to my childhood and I'm flooded with wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteThose sound like happy memories, Katrina! Thanks for sharing!
DeleteThey're both great picks! I love hearing Zooey Deschanel singing in Elf - and White Christmas is delightful.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy watching The Bishop's Wife. It's a sweet movie. Have a blessed Christmas!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good one! My dad's a huge fan of the original novel :-)
DeleteMy favorite Christmas movie is the one and only original Miracle on 34th Street!
ReplyDeleteSo good - have you ever seen the trailer for it? The studio didn't know how to pitch it, so they kinda pitched it as everything. It's awfully cute.
DeleteA Christmas Story..I see it every year, and still laugh every single time!
ReplyDeleteThat's so great, Tracy! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteHmm, I've never heard of some of these movies before; might have to check them out! Anyway, my favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas. I have a lot of childhood memories attached to it, and it's a fantastic movie on top of that!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Rachelle! Thanks for sharing!
DeleteIt's A Wonderful Life has always been my favorite! But I also like Miracle on 34th Street & A White Christmas. =D I also love to watch as many of the Hallmark Christmas movies as I can during the holiday's. . Can you tell I love Christmas movies?! Not sure if I commented twice. P,ease delete if its a duplicate. I love The Christmas Story, we discovered it a few years ago. My husband and my older kids thought it was so funny and laughed alot. My youngest, age 12, said she didn't get why we thought it was so funny. Maybe you need to be older?

ReplyDeleteI love to watch A Christmas Carol (starring Patrick Stewart) while making Molasses Sugar Cookies.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever saw "A Christmas Carol" it was animated. It starred Mr. Magoo. Jim Bacus was the famous voice of Mr. Magoo. I was so enthralled with that cartoon, that I asked for the book. I think I have since watched every movie made be it "A Christmas Carol" "Scrooge" or even "Scrooged" but I always, always watch Mr. Magoo.
ReplyDeleteThere are many Christmas movies my husband and I try to watch each year. It's a Wonderful Life is my all time favorite. It's followed by Christmas Carol with George C. Scott, Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, White Christmas or Holiday Inn. Enjoyed reading about your favorites, ladies.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Christmas movies are 'A Christmas Story', 'Polar Express', and 'A Flintstone Christmas Carol'
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation! Clark Griswald tries to go above and beyond everyone else in his neighborhood with all those Christmas lights. Its so funny.
